Alice Holt 10K and Fun Runs
Farnham Runners Press Release - 9/09/07
Alice Holt Forest, Farnham was the scene of a morning packed with family activity as Farnham Runners staged the 13th Alice Holt race on Sunday.
Inspired by the words of Sebastian Coe that Britain’s bid for the Olympics 2012 would try to encourage an extra two million people into sport, race director Charles Ashby this year instigated races of 5, 3 and 1 km for different age groups as well as organising the normal 10 km race. His vision and hard work paid off as, ably assisted by his wife Elaine and a large number of Farnham Runners, their relatives and friends the ambitious programme all went off successfully.
Trueman Letting Company of Castle Street Farnham, the Kinetika Gym at Farnham Sports Centre and Farnham Town Council provided essential sponsorship while the Red Cross was on hand for any first aid needed.
To make this a truly Farnham event the Town Crier Jonathan Jones started all the races and announced the prizewinners. Although the 10 km race attracts runners from far and wide there were many local competitors among them.
However, the overall winner by over one minute was Maciejl Lucyk, a visitor from Poland who had not raced in the UK before. He completed the challenging multi terrain course in a superb time of 33 minutes and 41 seconds. Next came last year’s winner Richard Gowen of Alton Runners in just 34.23, and 2006 runner up Nick Baker of Denmead Striders not far behind in 35.11.
Two Aldershot, Farnham and District ladies took first and second ladies places; Sarah Rollins in 40.25 and Shan Morgan in 41.06. Farnham Runners’ own Sarah Edson deservedly picked up 3rd prize with an excellent 41.51.
First and third team prizes went to Farnham Runners for both men and ladies with Alton Runners men and ladies both second (teams are calculated here by positions of individual runners).
